Very sweet sterling silver sweetheart brooch featuring 3 birds on a branch. It is hallmarked Chester 1900 and has the makers mark RJW for Richard John Wakefield of Tenby St North, Birmingham. It also has a c clasp and pin indicative of the era.
Sweetheart brooches were given as tokens of love by soldiers to their loved one before they entered active service. They were often also given to Mother's and other family members as keepsakes to remember the giver by. Birds were and still are popular motifs in jewellery.
Brooches were extremely popular in Victorian/Edwardian times and were often placed on ribbon around the wearer's neck to create a colliers de chien or ‘dog collar’. Brooches are now having a comeback and are a great way to add some individual style to your outfit.
The brooch measures 4.5cm.
This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This gorgeous brooch is in good antique condition.
