Special Memories To Keep Forever
For most of us here in Australia holidays are now over, school has started and everyone is back at work. Hopefully with special memories of happy and fun times.
As a child I remember the excitement of buying a souvenir or memento from the holiday. Dolls in the national costume of the country visited were my thing and I still have boxes of them in my garage!
The birth of souvenirs came about in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the sons and if they were lucky, daughters of the rich embarked on The Grand Tour to learn and absorb the art and civilisation of Europe. Objects such as paintings, vases and jewellery acquired on these trips were bought home not only as memories but also treasures to be admired by family and friends.
The Grand Tour is often seen as the beginning of tourism and with it the appetite for souvenirs.

In the 1950's, 60's and 70's silver charms of places visited or sights seen became popular souvenirs. Added to a bracelet or chain these charms were a permanent reminder of happy holidays and fun times. I have a great selection of vintage charms in the store including colourful enamel travel charms.

If you have fond memories of somewhere special and would like a unique memento please let me know. You never know I may be able to find it for you.

Not a charm, but do take a look at this amazing silver button from the late 1800's. Featuring the story of Cupid and Pysche it would originally have been part of a set on a gentleman or lady's jacket. A gorgeous gift for someone who loves beautiful and unique things.
