This product is sold out

Pretty vintage World War 2 9ct gold lined on sterling silver heart locket. It has the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badge of the rising sun on the front with enamel detailing and a plan back. The locket opens and closes securely and is stamped 9 silver lined. I have put it on a hand wired sterling silver curb chain with rose gold fill and silver beads to create a beautiful necklace.

Sweetheart lockets of this kind were sent home by servicemen to their loved ones. They were designed to share the spirit of patriotism during war time and were a symbol of connection and love. A very similar locket on a brooch is housed in the Australian War Memorial Collection.

Container jewellery to house tokens and special items have been around since Egyptian times and the first  “lockets” held medicinal herbs, religious relics, prayers or perfumes. Elizabeth 1 is thought to have owned one of the first sentimental lockets which was a ring depicting tiny portraits of both herself and her mother Anne Boleyn. Before the invention of photography locks of hair were often put in lockets to remind you of loved ones. The popularity of lockets as a keepsake grew with the widespread use of photography and endures today.

The locket measures 2cm x 2cm. The chain measures 50cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This beautiful locket is in good vintage condition.
