Victorian Sterling Silver Propelling Pencil Charm Necklace
$225.00
Beautiful Victorian (c1890) sterling silver engraved propelling pencil with a garnet top and sterling silver, garnet and pearl charms on a sterling silver bead chain. A totally unique and stunning necklace which would make unique gift.
Propelling pencils were first manufactured in the early 19th century and were often one of the components of a ladies chatelaine. A chatelaine was generally carried by the lady of the house and was a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain was mounted with useful household items such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, small purses, stamp cases and pencils.
The propelling pencil measures 5.3cm and the chain is adjustable, measuring either 50cm or 55cm.
This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. The propelling pencil is in excellent antique condition. The silver has been tested as it is unmarked and the pencil no longer holds a lead, however it is a very beautiful decorative piece of history.
