Victorian Silver Buckle Locket And Pearl Necklace

$395.00

Gorgeous Victorian c1880s silver buckle locket which I have added to a handwired pearl and vintage belcher chain with a sterling silver spring clasp. The clasp easily opens so that you can add your own favourite charms or pendants making it a truly versatile and beautiful piece of jewellery.

The locket has beautiful detailing on the front featuring a raised belt and buckle motif popular during the Victorian era surrounded by engraved foliage detailing. These types of lockets are increasingly hard to find.

Symbolism was very important in Victorian jewellery and the buckle was a popular motif. It represented eternity, fidelity/loyalty, strength and protection. The symbol curves around and threads back onto itself, creating an eternal loop.

Container jewellery to house tokens and special items have been around since Egyptian times and the first  “lockets” held medicinal herbs, religious relics, prayers or perfumes. Elizabeth 1 is thought to have owned one of the first sentimental lockets which was a ring depicting tiny portraits of both herself and her mother Anne Boleyn. Before the invention of photography locks of hair were often put in lockets to remind you of loved ones. The popularity of lockets as a keepsake grew with the widespread use of photography and endures today.

The locket measures 5cm x 4cm (including the ring). The total length of the chain is 52cm which includes the spring clasp.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. The locket has been tested for silver and is in great antique condition. It came to me with the ring broken and has been restored by my jeweller so that it can be loved again.
