Victorian Silver Aesthetic Era Swallow Brooch
$95.00
Gorgeous sterling silver brooch c 1880s featuring a beautifully engraved swallow and bamboo. The brooch has a c clasp and pin indicative of the era and would probably have once been a brooch locket.
Swallows are birds known to mate for life, and they always return to their nests after time away. They were therefore used in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery to symbolise love and constancy. Swallow brooches, as well as other jewellery bearing the image of a swallow, were also often given to loved ones when the giver set out on a long journey, as a charm to keep them safe until their return, and to guide the giver home. The symbol of the swallow often meant, 'to safely return home'.
Brooches were extremely popular in Victorian/Edwardian times and were often placed on ribbon around the wearer's neck to create a colliers de chien or ‘dog collar’. Brooches are now having a comeback and are a great way to add some individual style to your outfit.
The brooch measures 3.5cm x 2.5cm. This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This gorgeous brooch is in good antique condition with 2 bobbles missing from the left side. Please see photos.
