Charming Victorian antique Essex crystal brooch featuring a beautifully detailed reverse-painted terrier dog. The terrier is surrounded by a paste set horseshoe. The brooch is made from a nickel silver.

Essex crystal is a rare and collectible form of Victorian jewellery because of the skill needed to make it. Each piece centres on a cabochon of natural rock crystal. On the flat side of the domed crystal the artist worked in reverse from conventional painting by highlighting first, details second and background last so that the image is viewed correctly from the front of the crystal. The image therefore has a 3D effect. This technique was very popular from around the 1870's to around 1910 and often portrayed dogs, horses and country pursuits.

Paste stones are hand-cut glass gems. First seen in 18th century France, paste stones were used throughout the Victorian period, not as a cheap substitute for real gems but as a worthy jewellery material in its own right. The finest paste was cut using the same techniques used for diamonds giving it genuine sparkle. Antique paste was also set by hand and over time the stones develop a soft, slightly misty patina as seen in this brooch.

The brooch measure 2.5cm x 2cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This brooch is in great antique condition.
