Art Deco Silver 935 Guilloche Enamel Propelling Pencil Necklace

Stunning 935 silver and guilloche enamel propelling pencil on a contemporary sterling silver box chain. I found this beautiful object in an antiques fair in Tuscany and the colour immediately jumped out at me, I knew if would make a gorgeous pendant. 

The tip is stamped 935 and the enamel is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. 935 silver is of a higher purity than sterling silver and was predominately used in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Guilloche enamel is a process of layering a translucent coloured glass enamel over an engraved metal pattern, allowing the brilliant geometric texture underneath to catch and reflect the light.

Propelling pencils were first manufactured in the early 19th century and were often one of the components of a ladies chatelaine. A chatelaine was generally carried by the lady of the house and was a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain was mounted with useful household items such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, small purses, stamp cases and pencils. 

The propelling pencil measures 8cm including the ring and the modern chain  measures 60cm.
