SOLD Antique Sterling Silver Carnelian And Bloodstone Spinning Fob Chester 1896

Stunning antique sterling silver fob with carnelian and bloodstone inserts and lovely floral engraving features. The fob is hallmarked for Chester 1896 with the makers mark W.J.P. for William John Pellow of Hylton St, Birmingham.

Although based in Birmingham Pellow often registered his marks at the Chester Assay Office. His company was established in the late 19th century and he specialised in high quality silver items such as fobs, lockets and seals. This fob features the the high quality bright cut engraving seen in Pellow's work.The Chester Assay Office closed in 1962 making Chester hallmarked items scarce and collectible. 

A fob is an adornment or a seal that hung from the ribbon or chain of a Gentleman's pocket watch. Its purpose was to decorate or add weight to the watch chain.

This fob features a rotating "swivel" mechanism, which allowed the wearer to choose between two different stone faces and it measures 3.5cm x 2.8cm including the ring and bail. 

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to it's history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This fob is in great antique condition.
