Antique 1905 Sterling Silver Vesta Case Locket Necklace

$310.00

This unique necklace features a Victorian sterling silver vesta case on a contemporary sterling silver box chain. It is hallmarked Birmingham 1905 with the makers mark S & BM for Smith & Bartlam of Caroline St, Birmingham. The Vesta Case has beautiful forget-me-not flower engraving and the initials GLL.

The forget-me-not flower held a poignant meaning in Victorian jewellery. It symbolized enduring love and remembrance. Often given as tokens of affection, forget-me-nots were seen as a promise to always remember loved ones, even in their absence.

Vesta Cases were small portable boxes used to carry vestas (short matches) and were carried by men and women alike. So called after the name of one of the early makers (which was taken from the goddess Vesta, a Roman deity of fire and the hearth), they came into use around the 1830s and were produced extensively between 1890 and 1920. Worn today vesta cases become unique lockets to hold memories and mementos.

The vesta case measures 4cm x 4cm. The total length of the chain is 70cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This vesta case is in great antique condition considering its age and the lid opens and closes perfectly.
