Antique 1889 Sterling Silver Vesta Case Necklace

$345.00

This unique necklace features a Victorian sterling silver vesta case on a modern sterling silver chain with a silver hand and clasp feature. It is hallmarked Birmingham 1889 with the makers mark M.B for Mitchell Bosley & Co of Bath St, Birmingham and is in great condition. A totally unique and stunning necklace.

Vesta Cases were small portable boxes used to carry vestas (short matches) and were carried by men and women alike. So called after the name of one of the early makers (which was taken from the goddess Vesta, a Roman deity of fire and the hearth), they came into use around the 1830s and were produced extensively between 1890 and 1920.

Hands have been used as jewellery motifs since ancient times. The Figa Hand was said to ward off evil spirits and in the Victorian era clasped hands in jewellery represented love, matrimony and friendship. This sterling silver hand is a modern copy of an old motif.

The vesta case measures 3.5cm x 2.5cm. The total length of the chain is 65cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This vesta case is in excellent antique condition, the lid opens and closes perfectly.
