A gorgeous Victorian sterling silver locket with beautiful engraving on the front possibly of ivy leaves and a blank back. The locket is hallmarked Birmingham 1876. The makers mark is worn but is probably G.F. I have put it on a handwired sterling silver chain with freshwater pearls and crystals in pale aqua tones to create a unique and special necklace.
Jewellery of this era is very hard to find making it an even more special piece.
Symbolism was very important in Victorian jewellery and Ivy leaves were a popular motif as they represent everlasting life, devotion, fidelity and loyalty.
Container jewellery to house tokens and special items have been around since Egyptian times and the first “lockets” held medicinal herbs, religious relics, prayers or perfumes. Elizabeth 1 is thought to have owned one of the first sentimental lockets which was a ring depicting tiny portraits of both herself and her mother Anne Boleyn. Before the invention of photography locks of hair were often put in lockets to remind you of loved ones. The popularity of lockets as a keepsake grew with the widespread use of photography and endures today.
The locket measures 3.5cm x 2.8cm (including the ring) and the chain measures 68cm with a 4cm extension.
This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This locket is in good antique condition with a slight dent on the back. It opens and shuts firmly.
