Victorian 1885 Button Hook Charm Necklace
$210.00
Antique sterling silver engraved button hook and knife with a sterling silver, agate and pearl chain drop and on an Italian sterling silver curb chain. The button hook has the makers mark JA for Joseph Adelman and is hallmarked Birmingham 1885. The button hook and pearl drop can be slipped off the chain so each can be worn alone. A beautiful and unique necklace.
The button hook is engraved with ivy leaves which were a popular motif in Victorian jewellery and objects as they represent everlasting life, devotion, fidelity and loyalty.
In the Victorian period, men and women wore intricate frocks that had many buttons. In addition to having rows upon rows of buttons, garments were tight, making buttons tough to reach. The buttonhook was a tool used to help button shoes or clothing. This tool was particularly helpful in pulling buttons through holes on stiff leather boots.
The button hook measures 5cm (including the ring) and the chain measures 60cm.
This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. The button hook is in good antique condition.
