Antique 1911 Lucky Sixpence Necklace

$145.00

Silver 1911 British sixpence and freshwater pearl charm on a sterling silver box chain. A beautiful and unique necklace.

I love old coins especially antique silver ones. They are often smooth after many years of exchanging hands and have a real feel of history to them. What was bought with this lucky sixpence and did it ever bring good luck?

The sixpence is known as the lucky coin. During the early 1600's it was customary for the Lord of the Manor to give his bride a piece of silver as a wedding gift. This was symbolically represented by a sixpence coin hence the rhyme "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in her shoe". That tradition of the sixpence as a symbol of good luck continues today. Sixpence coins minted prior to 1920 are sterling silver.

The sixpence measures 2cm in diameter and the chain measures 45cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This coin is in great antique condition.
