Incredible heavy grosgrain ribbon bracelet created from antique sterling silver buckles. The buckles are all in excellent antique condition with beautiful detailing and engraving. They are all hallmarked as follows
Georgian raised flower detail buckles, hallmarked Birmingham 1816 and with makers mark GB possible for George Bower.
Plain, fancy shape buckle with clear makers mark A&LLD for Adie & Lovekin of Frederick St, Birmingham. The date mark is worn but the makers mark indicates they are c1890.
Floral engraved buckles with clear hallmarks for London 1907 and makers mark BG&Co for Britton, Gold & Co of Hatton Garden, London.
Shoe buckles were worn from the 17th century right through to the late 19th century. Although at first just a practical fastener these buckles soon developed into a sign of wealth and prosperity. They became a symbol of status, especially in France where they were targeted during the French revolution. The revolutionaries were said to chant "Down with the aristocrat shoe buckles!"
This is a totally unique and special bracelet.
The bracelet measures 19cm.
