This product is sold out

A rare antique pinchbeck vinaigrette with steel grille on a contemporary Italian gold fill chain. Wear the vinaigrette alone or add other charms to the chain to create a special and unique necklace.

Pinchbeck is an alloy created by Christopher Pinchbeck in the 1720's as a cheaper alternative to gold. The alloy composed of copper and zinc was brighter than brass and more resistant to tarnishing. It was used for watchcases, jewellery and decorative items until the 19th century.

A vinaigrette is a small hinged box or container often made of sterling silver and popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. They contained a sponge which was soaked in perfume or oils to mask the bad smells of the time. The sponge could also be soaked in vinegar to act as smelling salts for delicate individuals! The name of these containers comes from the French word for vinegar. The interior of these vinaigrettes were often highly decorated and washed in gilt to help prevent corrosion. They were small enough to keep in ones pocket or hung from a ladies chatelaine.

This vinaigrette is in excellent antique condition considering its age with a tiny bit of wear.

The vinaigrette measures 3.3cm x 1.4cm (including the ring). The chain is adjustable and can be worn at either 40cm, 42cm or 45cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care.
