British Silver Sixpence Love Token Albert

$95.00

Unique British silver sixpence antique love token with the name Albert hand engraved on one side.

The first love tokens were bent coins that could not be used as money, a practice going back to the 15th century in the UK. They were given to loved ones as an amulet or charm. By the 17th century coins began to be engraved on one side and were not only given as tokens of love but also as momentos to mark important life events such as marriage, birth and deaths! They were a much cheaper alternative to mourning jewellery and generally available to everyone as all types of coins could be used. Sometimes depending on the budget the engraving would be done by other family members. The more ornate examples would have been engraved by jewellers and could feature fancy patterns and decorations.

These love tokens are becoming increasingly rare.and this one is in fabulous condition.

Add a sterling silver 45cm box chain with pearl charm to your order to wear this charm as a unique and special necklace.

The charm is 2cm in diameter.
