This is an incredible large Victorian silver locket. It has beautiful detailing on the front with engraved ivy leaves and an unusual raised button feature. The back is plain with the hallmarks for Birmingham 1901 and the makers mark B&Co possibly for Broadway & Co. The bail has the lion hallmark for English silver.
These large Victorian lockets are hard to find. This beautiful example is in great antique condition with a small dent on the front which is almost unnoticeable unless you run your fingers along it. I have added it to a pearl necklace and a sterling silver bolt clasp. The clasp easily opens so that you can add your own favourite charms or pendants or remove the locket to add to a chain.
Symbolism was very important in Victorian jewellery and Ivy leaves were a popular motif as they represent everlasting life, devotion, fidelity and loyalty.
Container jewellery to house tokens and special items have been around since Egyptian times and the first “lockets” held medicinal herbs, religious relics, prayers or perfumes. Elizabeth 1 is thought to have owned one of the first sentimental lockets which was a ring depicting tiny portraits of both herself and her mother Anne Boleyn. Before the invention of photography locks of hair were often put in lockets to remind you of loved ones. The popularity of lockets as a keepsake grew with the widespread use of photography and endures today.
The locket measures 7cm x 4cm (including the bail). The total length of the pearl necklace is 50cm which includes the bolt ring clasp.
This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This piece of jewellery is in great antique condition.
