This beautiful necklace features an antique rolled gold photo locket, pearl charms and a vermeil hand pendant on a gold plated curb chain. The locket can be gently unscrewed at the top so that you can add your own photos to create a unique necklace.
Container jewellery to house tokens and special items have been around since Egyptian times and the first “lockets” held medicinal herbs, religious relics, prayers or perfumes. Elizabeth 1 is thought to have owned one of the first sentimental lockets which was a ring depicting tiny portraits of both herself and her mother Anne Boleyn. Before the invention of photography locks of hair were often put in lockets to remind you of loved ones. The popularity of lockets as a keepsake grew with the widespread use of photography and endures today.
Hands have been used as jewellery motifs since ancient times. The Figa Hand was said to ward off evil spirits and in the Victorian era clasped hands in jewellery represented love, matrimony and friendship. This vermeil hand is a modern copy of an old motif.
The locket is 2cm in diameter, the total length of the hand and locket is 6cm and the chain is and the chain is adjustable measuring either 50 or 55cm.
The hand pendant is made from sterling silver with 18k gold plate. The chain is gold plated with 1/2 micron 9 carat gold.
This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This gorgeous locket is in good vintage condition.
