Antique 1896 Sterling Silver Vesta Case Necklace

This unique necklace features a stunning oval Victorian sterling silver vesta case on a handwired sterling silver, gold fill and pearl chain. The vesta case has beautiful engraving of ivy leaves and baroque style foliage. Ivy leaves were a popular motif in Victorian jewellery and objects as they represent everlasting life, devotion, fidelity and loyalty. It is hallmarked Birmingham 1896 with the makers mark J.G for Joseph Gloster of Lion Silver Works, Hockley Hill, Birmingham and is in great condition. A totally unique and stunning necklace.

Vesta Cases were small portable boxes used to carry vestas (short matches) and were carried by men and women alike. So called after the name of one of the early makers (which was taken from the goddess Vesta, a Roman deity of fire and the hearth), they came into use around the 1830s and were produced extensively between 1890 and 1920. 

The vesta case measures 4.5cm x 3cm. The total length of the chain is 76cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. THis vesta case is in excellent antique condition, the lid opens and closes perfectly.
